Krishnamurti Retreat Centre Uttarkashi

"A goal, a purpose, a utopia, an end, is in itself divisive. If someone says, ‘I want to help you. I love this place, and I want to help you,’ I may say, ‘Come, let’s work together. There is no purpose, there is no goal.’ I will put my very best into it because I love this place. I don’t mind them telling me, ‘Please sweep the garden path.’ I say, ‘All right, that is part of the place.’ You see, all status and prestige disappears, and pure function remains."

- J Krishnamurti

Campus of KFI Uttarkshi Uttarakhand

The Krishnamurti Retreat Centre in Uttarkashi, a KFI Retreat, is situated in the Garhwal region of the Himalayas on the banks of the Bhagirathi river.

The Vision
The Centre was founded in the spirit of Krishnamurti’s vision of creating spaces where one could live and learn—free of authority, methods, or organized programmes. As he expressed:
“This is a place of learning and austere living with inward discipline, and work, without guru, without leader, and without a system of meditation or working.”

For over four decades, the Centre has welcomed seekers from across the world, offering a quiet environment of stillness, reflection, and deep engagement with the teachings of J. Krishnamurti. The Retreat operates on a non-profit basis and has always extended hospitality to serious seekers, including those who are unable to contribute even the suggested nominal charges.

The Urgent need.
The Centre comprises six simple cottages nestled amidst the mountains. Built nearly forty years ago, these cottages have endured the harsh Himalayan climate and continuous use. Today, they are in urgent need of renovation so that they may continue to serve as a sanctuary for inquiry and contemplation for generations to come.

Renovation Work Planned

We propose to undertake the following:

1. Cementing of degraded walls.
2. Damp-proofing of roofs and walls affected by moisture.
3. Complete painting of the cottages.
4. Repairing of furniture, doors, windows, tables, and chairs.

How You Can Help

Your support will help us preserve the rare atmosphere of simplicity, silence, and deep inquiry that Krishnamurti envisioned. This year, we aim to raise about 10–12 lakhs to meet the needs of renovation and sustenance. Every contribution—large or small—will help maintain the cottages and ensure that we can continue offering retreat opportunities to those who are unable to contribute financially
